Please give Sam Cheever a warm welcome today!
Liz: How long have you been writing books? Did or do you have another job as well or are you writing full time?
Sam: I’ve been writing full time since 2006. I was lucky enough to quit my high-stress day job a couple of years ago. Today I work 10 to 12 hours a day and 6 to 7 days a week at something I love. In other words, I never work!
Liz: Tell us your first book story--how and where and when your very first novel was published--how hard was it? How was the experience for you?
Sam: ’Tween Heaven and Hell (Bedeviled & Beguiled) was my first published novel. The book was published in 2007 by Ellora’s Cave. Before sending it out to publishers, I actually wrote the novel in serial form, offering it via monthly newsletter to about a hundred subscribers. When it was finished I rewrote it and began sending it out to publishers. I was shocked when EC wanted the book. I didn’t realize at the time they had two houses under the Jasmine Jade umbrella. ’Tween was published on the mainstream romance side.
Liz: Of all of your books (and I see there are a lot of them!) what is you absolute top favorite and why?
Sam: Probably my Bubba books, Bayou Bubba and Bubba Dub Dub. They’re fun cozy mysteries written for the Miss Fortune world under Amazon’s Kindle Worlds. The books were a ton of fun to write and I hope to follow them up with my own humorous cozy mystery series in 2016.
Liz: List your top 5 books of all time and why.
Sam: Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. The story was prophetic as well as interesting. I still think about the book to this day and see parallels to things that are happening in the world.
Tolstoy’s War and Peace. A great story and when you’re done with it you can use it to hold down papers on your desk. LOL
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This book marked the first young adult book I read that didn’t feel like a young adult book. I loved the entire series.
All of Jane Austin’s books. Aside from the wonderfully entertaining peek into history and the Aristocratic class, the books were astute portrayals of the best and the worst of human nature.
One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, because discovering that madcap humor existed between the pages of a book was a life altering experience for me.
Liz: What inspired you to write your included story: "Slow Burner?"
Sam: Of course alpha heroes are always inspiring and when I was invited to join this wonderful anthology of firefighter romances, I jumped at the chance. I’d been playing with the idea of starting a new series of firefighters/fire investigators for a while. This gave me the chance to realize the start of that dream.
Liz: What’s coming up for you after INTO THE FLAMES?
Sam: I’m currently working on book 3 in my paranormal cozy mystery series, Ghosts of Yesterday. Then I’m scheduled to join another anthology for January release so I’ll be writing a BBW romance for that project. I’ll also be working on a special Christmas project and finishing the re-edits on the rest of my Bedeviled & Beyond series. It’s going to be a very busy rest of the year!
