Welcome to LizLandia: Cindy Spencer Pape
Please join me as I welcome my fellow Michigan author from the INTO THE FLAMES anthology, coming 9/29 and now available for pre-order on all ebook retailing sites!
L: I know you write and enjoy both paranormal and steam punk novels. Are there elements of either in "Where There's Smoke," the book you've included in our INTO THE FLAMES anthology?
C: Oddly enough, this story came together with absolutely no paranormal aspects at all. I got so into the era of the 1920s that I didn’t feel any need to mess with it.
L:Tell us your "first book story." I.e. How/when/where your very first novel was published.
C: Well, that gets tricky because my first book published wasn’t my first book sold. I had three finished novels, two paranormal and one a contemporary Christmas story. I had tried submitting them elsewhere, gotten rejections and was frustrated. At that point, digital publishing came to my notice. At the time there were two “biggies” in the market, Triskelion and Ellora’s Cave. I sent one of the paranormal book to each of them and said, this is it. If they don’t sell, I’m done. Triskelion emailed me first, with a yes. So my first SALE was a paranormal called Curses to a company that has since gone out of business. A few weeks later, so did Ellora’s Cave, with Dragon in the System. This was in June of 2006. Both scheduled the books for the following spring. Then someone in a writing group posted a notice that a brand new house called Wild Rose Press was looking for Christmas stories, ones that were in good enough shape to get out by November of that year. I sent them The Cowboy’s Christmas Bride, and it was published in November, 2006, making it my third sale but first publication.
L: Have you written a firefighter style novel before? Think you'll do it again?
C: This was my first firefighter story and the research was daunting. I think that’s why I went with a historical, because while the period elements added more research, the technology and procedures were much simpler. I’m actually thinking of doing another book in that same setting, because I had so much fun with it.
L: What's coming up for you after this anthology? Any book signings or appearances readers can put on their calendars?
C: I spent this summer writing stories for THREE anthologies. Coming up after INTO THE FLAMES, I have a medieval paranormal called BELTANE LION in a set called ENTICE ME, coming out in October, then a steampunk western called RAISING STAKES in a set titled HERE BE MAGIC, scheduled for November. After that, it’s anybody’s guess.
I’ll be signing Sept. 24 at Frontal Lobe in Howell Michigan, as part of the downtown association’s Witches Night Out.
Hoping to do some conventions in 2016, but as of yet, I have nothing scheduled.
L: Name your top 5 books of all time.
C: Ugh. That’s a really tough one. I’ll probably change my mind six times this afternoon after I hit send.
· DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY by Douglas Adams
· HOGFATHER by Terry Pratchett
· CROCODILE ON THE SANDBANK by Elizabeth Peters

Here's more about her book, Where There's Smoke:
Carstairs, Michigan, 1926
Nettie Price supports her abusive father because of a deathbed promise to her mother. One of the highlights of her day is when Eli Lawson, lawyer, and volunteer firefighter comes in to her bookshop for his morning papers.
Eli can’t understand why Nettie doesn’t leave, but after one particularly brutal beating, he finds her and takes her to his home to recover, with his sister as chaperone. The sister is sure that Eli and Nettie belong together, despite being from opposite sides of the tracks. As a string of fires heats up the town, things also start to heat up between Nettie and Eli. Wedding bells seem to be in their future until Eli is injured in a fire. Convinced he’s no longer whole enough for Nettie, he calls things off.
Back at the bookstore, Nettie comes face to face with the arsonist as Eli races to rescue her. Will love be enough to save them both?
