Please welcome ADELE DOWNS to Liz Landia. Adele has a novel (Hook Me Up) in the upcoming INTO THE FLAMES anthology and unless you've been under rock, you know I do too!
Liz: How many books have you and published and how?
Adele: HOOK ME UP, my contemporary romance contribution to the INTO THE FLAMES anthology, is my twenty-first published romance title and my first venture into indie publishing. The experience has been exciting! All of my other books have been traditionally published. Currently, I write sweet but sexy romance novels and novellas for Entangled Publishing and Boroughs Publishing, but started my career in the mid-2000’s writing erotic romance for Loose Id, Ellora’s Cave, and Cleis Press under another pen name. I decided to go mainstream in 2012 and sold SANTA TO THE RESCUE, a sweet firefighter novella, to Entangled, which they published in 2013. Since then, I’ve continued to write stories about hot firemen, sexy cowboys, Harley-riding Midwesterners, and strong military heroes.
Liz: What is one thing someone told you that inspired you to write books?
Adele: My English teachers throughout high school encouraged me pursue writing, since English was my strongest subject, and I actually enjoyed writing essays and stories for my classes. What they didn’t know was that I’d been writing stories since childhood and first made the decision to pursue publication around age nine. By age nineteen I was writing and publishing freelance articles for newspapers and magazines.
Liz: Do you write full time?
Adele: Yes. I’m fortunate to have a quiet home office with lots of privacy. It wasn’t always that way, though. When I first started writing fiction around the year 2001, I had small children at home and owned a retail business, which I operated full-time. I wrote at night after my kids went to bed and again on weekends. These days, my schedule is much more flexible, and I spend my working hours writing.
Liz: I see a firefighter theme in a lot of your books. Is that your favorite type of book to read? If not, what is? If so, why?
Adele: I love writing about firefighters, which is why I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation to join INTO THE FLAMES. My award-winning novellas SANTA TO THE RESCUE and NATURALLY YOURS are similar in style and tone to HOOK ME UP. I also wrote a few firefighter themed erotic short stories under my former pen name. Last year, I wrote my first cowboy short stories for Boroughs Publishing’s Lunchbox Romance line, and my most recent novel LIP SERVICE features a hot Harley-riding mid-western hero who owns a sporting goods store.
Liz: List your top 5 books of all time and why.
Adele: I read lots of romance novels, thrillers and mysteries, and have been a voracious reader all my life. To list my favorite books of all time (a tall order!), I referred to my keeper shelf. Here are my top five, though there are others, because books have always been important to me.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, because his storytelling is compelling and his writing is lyrical. I read and re-read passages simply because the writing is so beautiful and convincingly feminine I could hardly believe the book was written by a man who is also not Japanese. A masterpiece.
Little Witch by Anna Elizabeth Bennet. This was my favorite book as a child and my copy remains on my keeper shelf. The story is still fun to read and was my introduction to paranormal fiction, which I also enjoy reading and writing.
The Harry Potter series. I love these books. My kids didn’t read them, but I pre-ordered all seven in the series and waited anxiously for the UPS truck to deliver each one of them on release day. When the books were turned into movies, I went to see them on IMAX, and then bought copies on DVD. Yes, I’m a Harry Potter fan. The world J.K. Rowling built was pure genius.
The Ladies of Seneca Falls by Miriam Gurko. This amazing book charts the history of the women’s movement in a reader-friendly way and is a life-changing reading experience. It should be required reading in high schools and studied in colleges. All men should read it and all women should own a copy.
God Herself: The Feminine Roots of Astrology by Geraldine Thorsten. Fascinating revelations about the Zodiac symbols and their true feminine origins, which were suppressed and replaced with the emergence of male gods. A great read.
Liz: What's your favorite line in HOOK ME UP, your included book in our INTO THE FLAMES anthology?
Adele: I’d tell you, but that would be a spoiler. Seriously. I hope you’ll read the story and choose your own favorite line from Knox or Lexi, the story hero and heroine.
Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog, Liz. It’s been a pleasure chatting with you.
