Join me in welcoming the New York Times Bestselling Author NJ Walters to Liz Land today!
Liz: Tell us the story of your first published book: how long did it take to get it published? by whom? How was the experience? What was it about?
NJ: I wrote my first book in the mid 90s. Actually, I wrote two. I shopped them around a bit and then put them in a drawer. Flash forward to 2003 and I saw an online writing contest. They wanted the first chapter of a book, and the deadline was two days. I wrote something and submitted it, but it didn’t place in the contest. I was into the story and kept writing the book. When it was done, I submitted it to an ebook publisher I’d read about. I got an acceptance and Annabelle Lee was released by Ellora’s Cave in October 2004. (This book is not available at this time, but I’m hoping to change that next year.)
I was shocked when I found out my book had been accepted, and terrified too, because the editor wanted me to add another 15, 000 words. I said I could, even though I had no idea if I actually could, and the rest is history. It totally changed my life and made me believe I could make a living doing something I love.
Liz: I see you write mostly paranormal themed books. Is your inclusion in INTO THE FLAMES paranormal? How so?
NJ: I write mostly contemporary and paranormal books, more paranormal than anything the past few years. What can I say? I love the dark side. Rescue Me, my novella in the INTO THE FLAMES box set, is indeed paranormal. When I thought about writing a firefighter story, it wasn’t a big leap for me to imagine the hero as a phoenix. It’s caused him a lot of problems in his life, but also allows him the chance to save the woman he loves.
Liz: You say you left your job at a bookstore to fulfill your dream. Are you able to write full time now?
NJ: I loved working at the bookstore. I mean…books! I was there about eleven years in total, but left in May 2005 and took the plunge into writing full time, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I love my job.
Liz: Tell me your top 5 books of all time and why.
NJ: OMG That is an impossibly hard question. My keeper shelf is overflowing. As soon as I answer this question, I’ll think of a dozen more that should have been on this list.
Five of my favorite books of all time are Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lover Eternal by JR Ward, Death Angel by Linda Howard, Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh and Beast Behaving Badly by Shelly Laurenston.
And these are just the tip of the iceberg. The list doesn’t include a long list of older books I absolutely love.
Liz: What's coming up for you after the INTO THE FLAMES release?
NJ: I have a new book in my Salvation Pack series releasing on October 13th. Wolf from the Past is Gator’s story and readers have been waiting for a year for this one. 2016 will be the year of the Salvation Pack as I have four books in my werewolf series being released by Samhain Publishing. It’s very exciting.
